The Constellations people to thank

Hey hey, Chris Dainty here. Well we did our pitch and we didn’t even mess up a line. We got some really helpful constructive criticism, which was a huge help. We are working on writing some new episode ideas then we will re submit and who knows maybe it will take off one day soon. But overall we are really happy of what we pitched, and it seemed to go over good. We will keep you posted.

So lets talk about the origin of this show idea. Well it all started with Jess, she had an idea about four girls that lived in a magical place where anything was possible. Then I asked her, "Hey want to work on this idea together?" So we started to build the world of the Constellations. The overall idea came from us tossing ideas back and forth of what these mythical creatures could be. Then the idea, Constellations came about. We looked in a book to see if there even was constellations to the characters Jess had designed. We make some changes, one being that Picey was at one point a fairy, which we changed to being the fish.

Jessica did all the designs for the characters as I wrote the show bible. We would often toss ideas back and forth to what they should look like, we even based Dr. Logic off a friend of ours, which was really funny. With our first episode that we wrote Jess came up with the idea for a talent show. I wrote the episode but every step of the way would bounce ideas back and forth. Finally after everything was written, I took Jess' AMAZING artwork and put it together for our show bible. And then 6 months later we both had a show pitch under our belt.

It’s been a great experience working with Jess, and so many others on this project.

Without these people help we wouldn’t have developed a show that I'm so proud to have my name on. It’s really been a great experience working on this show, and now its at the point were we are at the fine tuning stage and we'll see where it leads us.

So we have been busy recording audio for the pitch. The picture above is of Dylan Black when he was over recording the narration for our pitch. You might have heard is voice before if you live in the Ottawa area as he is a radio personality on The Bear 106.9. He also did a voice for the crazy Aunt Irene in my short "Emma Graves". Press time!

The colorful world of The Constellations

Well we finally have a look for the backgrounds! Jess did this amazing painting digitally. AMAZING work Jess!!! We are slowly getting closer to our pitch day only 23 days left,,,,, craziness!!!

Animation time

So we have started to animate the Constellations. We are creating a short bit of animation for our pitch in September. We will post some samples sortly.

Clean up of Dr. Logic

Well its been crunch time for Jess and I this past little while. We are putting together some animation for our pitch and things are really starting to come together. I sent the Pitch Bible to the printer today, and the result was AWESOME! We will hopefully have some animation to show you guys in the near future.

New Logo

So here is the new logo for "The Constellations". It was created by the very talented Sylvie Bissonette. Amazing work Sylvie!!! The older version didn't really have the cartoony look to it, and I find that this one really shows more of what the show should look like

The Big Pitch - SEPTEMBER 21/2006

Well The Constellations has a date for being pitched. We will be pitching the show at the Ottawa Animation Festival at the TAC "Pitch THIS". The Constellations is one of two winners, chosen from over 50 proposals from Canada, the US and overseas.

Pitch THIS! will be held on the second day of TAC, Thursday, September 21 at 11:00 am at the Chateau Laurier hotel. We have 10 minutes to pitch infront of a crap load of people. Following our pitch, there will be a 30 minute discussion and Q&A with the panelists, addressing the content and presentation of our pitch.

Heather Kenyon, Director of Development, Original Animation, Cartoon Network
Madeleine Levesque, Director, Original Production, TELETOON Canada

Jessica's Cartoon

This short was featured on Nickelodeon in the Nicktoons festival in 2005. It also was showcased in the Ottawa Animation Festival in 2005.

Chris Dainty's "Emma Graves"

This is my short of another show pitch that I'm working on independently called Emma Graves. The short was created to showcase how the characters interact for the series. Emma Graves target audience is girls 6-11. I hope you guys like it.

A new pic to show you guys.

Chris Dainty here, well this has been one roller coaster ride for me these last two months. From losing a good friend, to seeing my dreams in my career materialize it’s been an eventful time in my life. I've been working hard on my company Dainty Productions and just finished up my first contract for a small animated piece that will be featured in a documentary on CBC this Sunday the 16th at noon.

Apart from The Constellations, Jess and I have both independently been working on our own show pitches. I've been working on creating a show pitch for my short Emma Graves and Jess has been working on creating a show bible for her short Pandas. I will try and put these shorts up on the blog in the near future.

Jumping out of the stars

So we had a question in one of the comments

"was wondering do they have to go back to their 'star' form?"

And the answer is that in every episode it starts with them popping out of the night sky in the early morning. And every episode ends at dusk with The Constellations jumping off the clouds and turning back into their constellation star form.

The world of The Constellations

The opening shot of each episode begins here. As you can see, the peak of Mount Evermyst pokes through the top of the atmosphere where the stars gather, making it a great place for the Constellations to hang out. The feeling created by the show is that the human world is just a big backyard playground where the Constellations like to play.

Up in the clouds, anything the imagination can think of creating is possible. The Constellations have the ability to shape the clouds into whatever objects that come to mind. Thinking up ideas and adding a little bit of star dust to the clouds is all the Constellations have to do, so there is never a shortage of games or toys.

The Constellations a show for girls 6-11

This is a scene from our first script of The Constellations. Using her day planner, Aurora schedules what the girls will be up to for the day. Unfortunately for her, her fun filled plans usually get side tracked when they encounter Dr. Logic. He is usually inventing new gadgets to try and prove to the world that they exist. Dr. Logic’s failures and strange inventions have given him a reputation around town of being a little crazy. This becomes a driving force for Dr. Logic to prove them wrong. He goes to extreme lengths to try and scientifically prove that The Constellations are real.

We currently have the first episodes script written, and we are developing more storylines everyday. Celeste

Celeste is the giggly one of the group. She is an awkward chubby girl with a terrible nerdy laugh. She is large and clumsy.Celeste is very sensitive and its a shame because she does fall victim to other kids jokes. Celeste is a pack rat she always collects everything! Anything she sees that is shiny or pretty she starts a collection of it. She has room of shelves full of knick knacks she obsessively collects. The girls tease her about it but she can only reply "Tee hehe hehe I like pretty things, and if I see something pretty I must have it in my room!! I can't help myself! Tee heh ehe."

Celeste loves candy and romance novels. She giggles and blushes during the kissy chapters.

Transformation

So a key point to talk about in our show is the transformation between "The Constellations" mythical form, to their human pre-teen little girl form. Lots of adventures happen up in the clouds around the top of Mount Evermyst, this is where the girls are in the "mythical form". The second main location in the show in the little town at the bottom of the mountain. When venturing down into the town the girls belend in with the people by changing into their human form.


The Constellations magically tranform into their human form using their 'cloud powder kits' located at the side of the mountain.
